Art as a Tool for Change
The trinational project “Dance Theatre as an Empathetic Path toward a Sustainable World” brings together dance/theatre educators and education practitioners from three continents: Europe (Germany), South America (Colombia), and Africa (Cape Verde).
In 2025, the six project leaders from the participating countries met on the island of Fogo (Cape Verde) to develop transferable methods and concepts for communicating the Sustainable Development Goal SDG 15, “Life on Land,”through the performing arts—particularly dance theatre—as part of an international training program. Through a shared learning process, they reflected on their own practices and tested various workshop modules, laying a methodological foundation for future exchange projects.
The outcome is a practical guide that describes the methodology and presents exemplary modules and exercises. It links environmental education, sensory learning, performative forms of expression, and intercultural learning in order to raise young people’s awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda and to empower them as engaged global citizens who advocate sustainably for the rights of the Earth and carry these issues back into their local contexts.
The project was initiated by steptext dance project e.V. (Germany) in cooperation with Institución Educativa Las Palmas (Envigado, Colombia) and Proyecto Vitó (Cape Verde). The project is further supported by the NGO Change the World (Colombia), Escola Secundária Dr. Teixeira de Sousa (Fogo Island, Cape Verde), and the Maio Biodiversity Foundation (Cape Verde).
The project is funded by Engagement Global with resources from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
