YARIN von Andrés Marín & Jon Maya

Dance Spain 2023

Yarin

Yarin

Two iconic dance forms shake hands here: Andrés Marín and Jon Maya confront the formal staccato of flamenco with the compelling physicality of Basque dance. Together they lay bare the roots of both dance forms, encounter each other in a dialogue of styles and nourish the power of their movements from the presence of their counterparts.

Like the two dance forms, flamenco dancer Andrés Marín and Jon Maya, artist at Malandain Ballet Biarritz, have mixed their names: Yarin. They listen to each other while dancing, rub against each other, provoke each other, hug each other, try on unfamiliar artistic reality for moments. In this pas de deux, everyone merges with the other person's aesthetics and at the same time focuses on their own dance in order to work out its essence and intensity. Sometimes down to earth, sometimes airy – the rhythm of feet and arms brings them closer and further apart. The danced dialogue between the two unfolds to live singing by Julen Achiary.
